Historical and Biographical Note

The Graduate Committee was a subsidiary body of the American University in Cairo's Academic Board, the university's principal body for making and executing academic policy from the 1956 to 1993. Its membership was comprised of the Dean of Faculties/Provost (who usually chaired the committee), departmental chairmen, and other administrators and faculty members. The committee was responsible for recommending changes to the university's graduate curriculum, by approving or rejecting proposed courses and degree programs, adopting and changing degree requirements, revising the university catalog, and taking similar actions. Another function was the implementation and enforcement of academic policies and regulations related to graduate admissions, registration, grading, fees, and fellowships, assistantships, and scholarships. Individual graduate student admission, academic standing, and procedural cases and petitions were also decided by the committee (and its Subcommittee on Student Cases from 1989-1993). In 1993 the Graduate Committee was discontinued when the Academic Board's functions were replaced by a newly created University Senate.
