Historical and Biographical Note

The Academic Board (known as the Academic Council before 1963) was the American University in Cairo's principal body for making and executing academic policy from the 1956 to 1993. Its membership was comprised of top university administrators including the President, Vice President, Dean of Faculties and Provost, Dean of Students and departmental chairmen. The board was responsible for making changes in the university's curriculum, by approving or rejecting proposed courses and degree programs, adopting and changing degree requirements, revising the university catalog, and taking similar actions. Another function was the implementation and enforcement of academic policies and regulations pertaining to admissions, registration, class attendance, grading, fees, and other matters. Individual student cases related to academic standing and graduation requirements were decided by the board. The Academic Board also elected the members of various university committees, such as the Student Affairs Committee, University Council, and administrative committees for units like the Social Research Center and University Press. In 1993 the Academic Board and its subsidiary committees were discontinued, their functions replaced by a newly created University Senate.
