This series contains files for only several of AUC's academic units, and none of the files presents a comprehensive set of documents. Other documents indicate salient issues during the Byrd Presidency, including the activities of Management Extension Services and the controversy over the nullification of the Sociology/Anthropology/Psychology Department's election of a Chairperson.

Series 3: Administration, 1973-1977 0.5 Linear Feet (1 Box)
The administration series documents university governance and operations. The circular memoranda issued by President Byrd, for example, deal with administrative and personnel issues such as the 1974 Presidential and Dean of Faculties searches. Presidential reports provide concise summaries of the state of the university, as does a 1974 planning and fundraising report by Burt Wallace, a development officer (later provost) engaged by the trustees. This series reflects Byrd's working relationship with the university's board of trustees, in correspondence revealing differing views on their respective roles in university governance. Byrd's 1976 letter to the trustees announcing his resignation describes in detail these differences and how they manifested themselves in control over finances (in connection with the activities of Management Extension Services and the University Educational Endowment Fund) and the role of the New York office. Documents prepared for planning trustee meetings provide helpful biographies of board members. Another important set of documents relates to the 1974 protocol between the university and the Egyptian government, an agreement granting government recognition of AUC degrees. A file on commencement planning describes the selection of Dr. Aisha Rateb as AUC's first female commencement speaker, in June 1974. This series also contains a folder on President Christopher Thoron's death and subsequent memorial activities at AUC.

Series 6: External Organizations and Individuals, 1973-1977 0.75 Linear Feet (1.5 Boxes)
AUC's relations with other institutions are documented in this series. Among these were partnerships with universities in the United States and elsewhere - ranging from training programs conducted for Saudi Arabia's King Abdel Aziz University to summer seminars conducted for classes of American university students. A January 1974 memorandum on such AUC programs for American groups discusses these kinds of activities. Files here also indicate AUC efforts to assist other regional universities with their educational programs, for example by providing advice on the development of the library Egypt's Tanta University. AUC's contacts with Egyptian and United States government agencies are also reflected here, as are its dealings with other regional academic and research institutions, like Cairo American College. Relationships with oil companies like ARAMCO, manifested in fundraising contacts and AUC's operation of training programs for their employees (typically through Management Extension Services), feature prominently in these records. Other donor files are also included.

Series 7: Facilities and Services, 1974-1977 0.25 Linear Feet (0.5 Boxes)
The activities of several university units are documented in detail in this series. Director Safeya Sheata details the Alumni Office's programs fostering alumni contacts (international alumni gatherings) and providing services (employment placement). Events such as the unveiling of the Wendell Cleland memorial plaque and an Alumni Board dispute are also recorded. Efforts to upgrade printshop equipment, as well its ongoing publishing program, are described by director Mason Rossiter Smith in the file for the AUC Press. Reports also outline the functioning of the Clinic and Computer Center.
The planning and construction of the university's new library building is the most prominent matter covered in this series. These library planning files include correspondence and reports generated by architect Hugh Jacobsen, contractors, librarian Jesse Duggan and University Engineer Yehia Fahmy. Financial support by the United States Agency for International Development and Lila Acheson Wallace is documented, as are the execution of construction contracts and the procurement of furniture and equipment. The August 1976 fire at the construction site and the resulting project delays are described in detail. Other library planning files can be found in Byrd's records as Dean of Faculties.
