After receiving his doctorate Byrd was appointed curator of rare books and special collections at Indiana University, and spent 1943 to 1945 in military service during the Second World War. Byrd served as Assistant and Associate Director of Libraries at Indiana from 1946 until 1964, during which time he negotiated the library's relationship with J. K. Lilly and the Lilly Endowment and took part in the planning of the Lilly Library. Byrd became University Librarian in 1964. During the 1960s, he acted as a consultant on library building projects in Indonesia, Thailand, and Pakistan.

In 1972, the American University in Cairo engaged Byrd as a consultant for the planning of its new university library, at the recommendation of trustee and former Indiana University chancellor Herman Wells. Byrd joined the university on a permanent basis the next year, when he succeeded Richard Crabbs as Dean of Faculties in the fall semester 1973. In addition to coordinatin 2000 g the university's academic program, Byrd continued to participate in the planning process for the new AUC library. Byrd was named Acting President of the university in December 1973 due to President Christopher Thoron's deteriorating health. He held this position while continuing to serve as Dean of Faculties. During this time some of the responsibilities of the latter position, such as faculty recruiting, were delegated to other university officials.
