Historical and Biographical Note

The Department Chairmen Committee, composed of the Dean of Faculties/Provost, the Vice Dean/Vice Provost, chairmen of the academic departments, and the Library Director, dealt with academic, faculty, and student affairs at AUC. Among the academic issues handled by the committee were proposed courses and degree programs, new initiatives (like lecture series and the Freshman Writing Clinic), degree requirements, class schedules and sizes, registration procedures, grading standards, and policies on matters like academic dishonesty. It addressed faculty issues such as recruiting, salaries, grants, promotion and tenure criteria, and the Distinguished Visiting Professor Program. The committee was also responsible for administrative matters ranging from promotional efforts to managing staff. The committee was discontinued when the university was reorganized into three schools (Humanities and Social Sciences, Sciences and Engineering, and Business, Economics, and Mass Communication) in 1993. Most of its functions were replaced by the Provost's Council and school committees.
